Ian Butcher was a 1st class cricketer during the eighties, playing for Leicestershire and Gloucestershire. He is part of the Butcher cricketing dynasty that includes brother Alan Butcher, who played for Surrey, Glamorgan, & England as well as being a former coach to Zimbabwe. Nephews Mark Butcher, playing for Surrey & England as well as Gary Butcher, playing for Surrey and Glamorgan.
Ian spent 15 years coaching with the Northamptonshire Academy and Emerging Players squads, as well as their Junior County set up. During this time he also gained an ECB level 3 coaching qualification.
Now living in London, Ian runs his own coaching company 'Butch4Cricket', which specialises in 1:1 and small group tuition. He is also head of cricket at 'The Harrodian' school in Barnes, as well being the head coach at Barnes CC.
I have seen real progression in my cricket since working with Butch. He is great at getting his ideas across and finding ways to demonstrate skills so that they stick. Butch makes his training sessions challenging, but also entertaining and rewarding. He is enthusiastic about the sport and always happy to share his insight into the finer points of the game. I often recommend Butch to fellow players and colts' parents - his is a quality coach who is serious about getting results.
Ian has a charming and patient manner with children and parents alike. His cricket coaching is thoroughly captivating. Butch combines his seasoned professional eye with the ability to explain in simple language the finer mechanics of the game, be it bowling or batting. He has a fun drill for every occasion which delights as it unlocks visible improvement on a weekly basis. I would recommend Ian, better known as 'Butch', to anyone as THE quintessential cricket coach.
In his role as a specialist batting coach Ian has been responsible for bringing on our best young players and has instilled all the solid fundamentals in terms of technique and tactical game plans. I have no hesitation in recommending Ian as a top class batting coach who consistently delivers high quality and standards in this specialist field.
I have coached with Ian on many occasions and would recommend him to anyone. He has passed his coaching badges, but more importantly Ian is enthusiastic, knowledgeable on all aspects of the game and he has a great rapport with pupil and parent alike.
Butch orchestrated our sessions in a professional, fun and engaging manner. His vast knowledge, experience and ideas he shared with the squad were instrumental in the side's successful season, gaining promotion and reaching the county cup final. His creative, yet highly modern training plans challenged the players to think about the game and develop in ways they may have not previously considered - whether this be one-on-one batting drills, group fielding sessions, etc. Every one of the players that trained under Butch's supervision thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I hope the club can continue the arrangement for many years to come.
I have known Butch since our days at Leicestershire all those years ago. He made the most of his opportunities then and is now fully committed to helping the current generation of aspiring cricketers to do the same. Since starting up Butch4Cricket he has quickly gained the reputation as the the man to go to for batting coaching.
